Well-known as the City of Joy, Kolkata is one of the major metropolitan cities of India. The city was India’s capital for a greater part of the colonial period and served as the main center of the nationalist awakening which took place in the 19th century. The city has several monuments which are a testimony to colonial rule. Here are some of the historical places in Kolkata which are worth visiting: -

Victoria Memorial

This white palace, set amongst lush green gardens is one of the major monuments which was built during the British period. It was conceived by Lord Curzon and built in the memory of Queen Victoria. It was designed by Sir William Emerson using white Makrana marbles. The architectural style of the building has been influenced by both the Mughal and British styles of architecture. Within the building is a museum which has a great collection of coins, weapons, maps, paintings and sculptures from different historical periods.

Dakhshineshwar Kali Temple

This temple has a rich heritage. It was built by Rani Rashmoni, a pious woman who had an aristocratic background. Built in 1855, the main Kali temple is surrounded by twelve temples dedicated to Shiva in his twelve names.  The best time to visit Kolkata is during October-March. The temple is a fine example of the distinct architectural style prevalent in Bengal. Lord Sri Ramakrishna served as a priest in this temple for a greater part of his life. It is thronged by devotees throughout the year.

Marble Palace

Constructed in 1835, this was the royal place of Raja Rajendra Mullick and is one of the fine examples of architecture which flourished in Bengal during the British period. Made from white marble, it has a great collection of art works done by artists such as Murillo, Ruben, Titian etc. You need to take the permission of the West Bengal Tourism Information Bureau a day in advance to gain permit to visit this palace.
